Yakety Yak time...

Now waiting to go for lesson so thought I might blog on this now defunct blog site. Well recently I've been quite busy and haven't really seen my good friends like ZR, LL or NSS. That was not until NSS's grandfather passed away though; where ZR, LL and me went down to the wake. Btw, that was yesterday.

Still got around 40plus minutes to my next lecture....super sian. Supposed to be studying but really no mood cause I screwed up the German Vocab Test that I took just 2 days ago. Filled in less than half the blanks...totally screwed liao. Even though my friend, LP told me only worth 10 percent but 10 percent can make a lot of difference especially since I didn't do well for my German Sem Test. Lucky thing, I s/u-ed this horrendous module. After having written that, I feel like a whiny bastard...

Talking about yesterday though, the legendary fried oyster with egg is really superb. Would recommend to all to try once in your lifetime. If you are heading down to Upper Serangoon Road area, I would suggest you drop by the Simon Road corner kopitiam (Real Kopitiam hor not the Foodcourt "Kopitiam") anyway, there got no Foodcourt "Kopitiam" so you won't get the wrong place... LoL. An advice to those who want to head down over there in the mornings: Try the morning fried oyster then come back another day to try the one fried in the evenings. You would be able to tell the difference if you are a connoisseur. Also, if you are health-conscious, please stay away!!

Next, warning to those who want to try the Hokkien Mee at the same kopitiam, a mutual friend of zr and me went to the loo last night so ahem, if you are daring enough, please go ahead and tell me if you also went to the loo too :-P

I think I've crapped enough to fill up maybe the current reading frame of the blog liao so maybe it's time I stopped ;-) I'll blog again when I have the time to do so LoL

National Day 2006

Today is our National day. The day where back then in Aug 9 1965, we had successfully gained independence from the British Empire. Now, as we celebrate our 41st National Day , my eyes were glued to the TV screen for the 3 hour parade that i watch without fail for almost every year in my memory.

As i sat listening to the TV commentators, i can't help but feel a little dip in mood. This year, we have a Lieutenent-Colonel (LTC) who is commanding the parade and according to the commentators, it is the "highest point" in his professional life. It signifies that we had not experienced any major conflicts in recent years. While most would agree that it is a good thing, i am worried that the preparedness of the defence forces to handle such potentialities are simply not enough. Well, enough said. Overall, I think the programme was good, almost everything was precise and neat, which portrays the efficient side of us.

However, take a look at this article i had just read. It was an interview in 1994 by a student, of David Marshall. David Marshall, as i knew through the SS module i took, was apparently a leader of a political party.

Back then in the 1960s, he had tried to negotiate independence for Singapore and vowed to resign if he failed. Well, he failed, and it was later that we had received independence because of the threat from communism radicals and the pressure with the independence of Malaysia in 1957. (Imagine the spillover effect had we turned communist) Well, after reading his article, i realized that most of us (at least within my circle of friends) are really chasing after wealth and glory. However, is that the true meaning to life? Does wealth really make us happier? Here is the interview:

Things to say

I've just realised our latest update was like 2 months plus ago...seems like the only people blogging on this is JR and me. Waha is officially busy with his drawings.

It's been quite a while since we entered uni and the three of us seem to be drifting apart. Maybe it's just me but to be honest, I haven't been quite free since I took up exco positions in both CCAs. Also I had been quite occupied with the Union Camp and organising of Matric Fair. In all, this holiday isn't quite a holiday at all.

I've learnt many things during the planning of Matric Fair and also as a councillor of Union Camp. But, the only regret is that I was unable to submit the necessary hardcopy documents for my SEP as I was pre-occupied with these two events. Nevertheless, I personally felt that the fault lies in me as I was not familiar with the procedure of applying for SEP. Well, saying anything now still doesn't change the fact that I was unable to go for SEP because of my bad planning and un-preparedness. The only hope I've got not to lose this valuable opportunity to go for SEP is to hope that I'll be able to get a CAP score good enough to secure me for my honours year...

Quite a while

Hi guys, wow it's been long since the last post.. Well for me i've been slacking a lot while selectively trying to find a suitable job..

Just saw on news that las vegas sands had won the bid for the IR resort 1! I had almost forgotten about the whole issue till i got reminded about it again. But i think its not bad. In terms of social problems, there would definitely be a noticeable increase but i think its a give and take scenario. But aside from ethical concerns, i think it would give an uplift to revitalize our tourism and services industry. Because i can't seem to think of any reason to visit SG except perhaps for not overcharging prices at airport shops, the Great SG sale (I already saw discounts up to 50% over the other day at Marina Square) and blah blah the usual safe and green argument.

Oh yes speaking of Marina, just went there a couple of days ago. I think it is pretty much nice and complete now.. Walked and walked and probably what most caught my sight were the various restaurants and eateries. I think it could almost pass for a food haven. Ya and speaking of it i'm reminded by the esplanade. Also went there the other day. It was the first time i went to the roof terrace in the night, and the place coupled with the skyline was just brilliant. I took a photo of it, will probably upload it after i figure how to transfer the picture from my handphone to the computer..

The PC show is coming. I wanna upgrade the comp, but i don't want a complete upgrade as it will set me back by many hundreds of dollars, thereby reducing me to a beggar of sorts.. So for any tech savvy people out there, can anyone recommend a value added graphic card for my poor AGP 8x? I'm currently using a GF4:MX and it really sucks in this era. I recently realized that it doesn't even contain basic pixelshading features and oh yes, did i mention it sucks?

Exams and Elections

Arrgh...this is the second night in a row that a political party has held their campaigning over at the big field in front of my house. Yesterday, it was Worker's Party and tonight it will be People's Action Party. Living in a constituency where the media claims it is a hot-seat is not altogether fun. Sure, you do get to vote and ya, this is my first time voting in a general election but I am not too excited to vote (wait till my elder cousin hears this...she'll kill me as she waited like many years before she got to vote and I still wonder if she got to vote over in her constituency) due to the many issues that I have no answer for.

Time to switch modes to the post-exam mood ;) Yeah!! The exams are finally over... Not to talk about the oncoming three months of break which I would be busying myself with lots of CCA activites and an orientation camp for the freshies. Can't wait for the camp to happen :)

Ah...back to politics. Anyway, PAP has been really eyeing this seat but it seems Mr Eric Low can't seem to get Mr Low Thia Khiang off Hougang's single seat. Isn't it strange? According to reliable sources aka my Dad, these two candidates not only share the same surname but also are hokkien people. Haiz...it is hard to vote for two people that are similar in many ways other than the fact that Mr Low Thia Khiang is the Worker's Party Chief and has been Hougang's MP for many years. I remember that the previous election, Mr Eric Low was quite close in beating Mr Low Thia Khiang (maybe the info is wrong?) but a win by Mr Low Thia Khiang is still a win.

Issues like upgrading were brought up once again by the PAP candidate and possible re-painting of the older blocks. But most of these things do not really appeal to me as a voter as these are more of a bonus rather than a necessity. Personally, I felt that the opposition could have offered these things if they had the ability to do so. A single man can only do so much.

So now the point being is to see who actually would appeal more to the masses by means of charisma, passion and ability. Sometimes, in my personal opinion, people vote for the opposition for their presence in the parliament to counter the policies raised by the government(ruling party) and not for the benefits offered by the political parties. So I wonder should I just follow the rest or to vote for PAP?

As I make my move to end this little "trivial" matter, the weather seems to get worse with the gathering of clouds and thunder sounding all over. Nothing is for sure what this election's outcome would be. The only thing's for sure is that tonight would rain pretty heavily and PAP's campaign turnout would be affected by the weather.

Film Review

Just about 2 days back, Loren, Swee Shoon and I went to Jurong Point to watch "Munich". Like all good films, it has an underlying moral behind the whole story. But before I start getting all philosophical on all of you, let me tell you what I knew before I actually watched the show.

The Munich Olympics was probably the most well-known Olympics not because of the good competition but rather of the abnormal hostage crisis that was attributed to the Israel and Palestinian conflict in the Middle East. For those of you who have not heard about it, the Israeli athletes who were taken hostage were all slaughtered by the 11 Palestinian gunmen. After this incident, it was rumoured that Israel had sent assasins to finish these 11 gunmen. Steven Spielberg's film mainly revolved around this rumour and showed how these assasins carried out their duty for their motherland. The point that I found interesting about this incident was the inability of the host nation Germany to contain these Palestinian gunmen or to send an anti-terrorist team to handle the situation. By the way, for those of you who are interested in the World's Special Forces, the point to note would be that Germany had formed their GSG-9 special forces after that particular incident to handle such future incidents.

Although the film was based upon a true story, it was still pretty dramatised like all movie films with the "Is it him? Is it him??" lines then rapid firing from the Israeli commandos. And I still don't know how the heck can sexual intercourse give you inspiration for a flashback... Well those of you who haven't watched the flick, note that there would be lots of blood, some nudity and perhaps some comedy (some one liners)... So definitely, I would recommend this film to those looking for a movie to watch that has an underlying moral to it. Of course I won't spoil your movie by telling you the moral :) You can leave your comments on the tagboard with regard to this show if you want to or you can tell me what you think the moral of the story is.

Local warming

Jus wanna bitch about the weather todae. It's so freakin darn hottt lately.. The plants r drying up, dying just because it wouldnt rain! Someone shd go do something about it, seed the clouds or wad.. Just.. Make it coolER. Just 1 degreee celcius would do.. Pleaseee...

Todae we had a new lecturer. Oh isn't she good. She managed to lull the whole lecture theatre into deep slumber! It's a waste she's a lecturer, not some child-care tutor or sth.. She would make a perfect hypnotist too btw..

And yes what u all haf thought all along was right! Bus drivers on the road r blind! Todae some big bus driven by an experienced guy (at least he's out of P plate) almost drove right into my lane. Thanks dude, had to make me swerve to avoid collision. Maybe that was his intention eh? Recently there was a report on how some accident-happy guy colluded with his workshop friends to try to con insurance payouts from accidents..

Some thoughts

I used to think that people who splurge on credit cards and luxury items on credit, eventually being unable to pay and declared a bankrupt were stupid. At least that is what our society perceives them to be. However, recently i've been thinking about it. Are those people really dumb, who just can't help spending and spending, something like a cigarette or gambling addiction? Or are they in fact really smart people who knows that you live life only once, and so to make the best use of it?

Imagine a normal middle-class worker, working all day/night. Finally getting a first home. Marries, Children. Saving for retirement. Retires. Live the rest of their lives simply, on their CPF payouts and/or savings/children's contribution, reverse mortage, whatever.

That kind of life is ordinary. Won't it be good to perhaps experience what a normal worker can never get to experience in their entire lifetime? Ie. live in a condominium/driving luxury cars/spending lavishly on food/everything else. Even though eventually you may go bankrupt for the inability to pay bills, at least you can boast about it throughout your life, having done what normal people with insufficient resources can only dream of..

So it goes back to what society perceives them. They think that those people are stupid, to be declared a bankrupt. But bankruptees can once again rise from the ashes, albeit having a life-time out-of-the-world experience. So is that really silly? It's time to rethink...
